Premature babies are a unique population that have been traditionally neglected by the medical device industry. Scarce medical technologies are authorized for neonatal patients, despite the population's critical medical needs.
As premature babies have not had the time to fully develop, they are not always equipped to survive life outside the womb. In order to overcome the complications accompanied by early birth, preemies require extensive care. Advances in neonatal technology give babies a real chance at life, and have tremendously improved this population’s access to care.
Premature babies are vulnerable to intense health complications, especially when their body temperatures are not sustained. Premature babies are not able to control their body temperatures as successfully as babies that are fully developed, and lose heat very quickly. Preemies are often born at very low body weights, which means they do not have enough body fat to conserve heat.
Credited to researchers at Nottingham Trent University, a smart mattress with a precisely controlled heating system is in development. Drager is additionally offering key advances in incubator technology providing vital quality improvements for preemies and their families.
The Drager BabyLeo epitomizes the most modern advancement in neonatal technology, revolutionizing the design of incubators. The BabyLeo is the first incubator to synchronize a connective heater, dual radiant warmer, and smart mattress all while providing family-centered care.
Incubators allow premature babies to put all of their energy into growing, so that they do not waste precious energy on preserving warmth.
As a dominant product in advancing preemie care technology, the BabyLeo integrates family-focused features in its design and allows mothers to breastfeed their babies without disrupting treatments. The BabyLeo features a height adjusting variable so that mothers can breastfeed without removing the baby from the incubator, even if the mother is in a wheelchair.
Epitomizing innovation and creativity, the BabyLeo offers the ability to play the heartbeat or voice of their mother to the baby. According to research completed by the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, exposure to a mother's voice and heartbeat sounds pave vital neural pathways in newborns - such as the development of hearing and language skills.
The BabyLeo comes with a screen that displays personalized information about the baby and their progress. This feature is key in involving parents in their newborn’s care, as it is presented in an understandable format. While caring for premature babies has historically been a challenge, new technologies offer a promise of improved medical care for our most vulnerable population.
